Student Healthcare debate

Belfast Health & Social Care Trust 2018 Student Healthcare Debate

In its 4th year, the Belfast Trust’s Healthcare debate aims to give young people, an opportunity to engage with the hot topics in health and social care. Last year RBAI narrowly defeated St Mary’s High, Newry with their arguments on “The health service is less safe at weekends because there are too few medical staff on duty.” Could it be your school this year?

Involvement in the debate activity will support students further in their consideration of a healthcare related career and in their UCAS applications. Debate topics will be public health focused and pertinent to current issues facing healthcare professions.

Schools have the opportunity to put forward a team consisting of max. of 5 students (one team per school) all of whom have a healthcare career choice focus. The students must be in Year 13 or Year 14 and will participate in or have participated in a healthcare work experience placement.

First stage of the process: teams are invited to complete the attached application form. The completed application form should be submitted electronically to kerri.mcardle@belfasttrust.hscni.net to reach the shortlisting panel by Friday 12th October 2018.

Second stage of the process: Successfully shortlisted teams (4 teams) will be notified by Business in the Community Work Inspiration before close of school day on Friday 19th October and provide them with their semi-final topic. Business in the Community Work Inspiration will also advise those teams not shortlisted before close of school day on Friday 19th October.

Third stage of the process: Four shortlisted teams will be invited to attend the semi-final debate on Monday 12th November at 2.00pm in Mater Hospital.

Final stage of the process: The two semi-finalist winning teams will be invited to compete in the final debate event, which will be held on first week of December (date TBC) in the Boardroom, King Edward building, Royal Victoria Hospital. Judging panels will consist of senior management representatives from the Trust and the Department of Health. All debate participants will receive recognition of their contribution to the process and the winning team will be presented with a prestigious winner’s award trophy for their school.
